A hardy band of 6 weasels hit the ice on New Years Eve day to take advantage of the balmy 50 degree temperature. Weasels Larry,Joel,Jarrod and Brent met up with Jon and Elena to give Rhoeders pond a workout prior to the new year. Fishing was excellent with everyone catching all the fish they wanted. It was pretty much a catch and release exercise except that Weasel Brent wanted to take a few home for lunch. We envoked the 7 inch rule and by the time we headed home he had a very nice mess of bluegills and perch. About half the bluegills were in the 9 inch plus range and as I mentioned we kept nothing under 7 inches. I think he brought home a total of 22 fish. We also caught several bass in the 10 to 12 inch range. Too small to keep but a lot of fun to catch on a jig pole. Weasel Elena kept up with the guys and by the end of the day had learned how to take her own fish off the hook and bait her own line. We also helped her to develop a mean streak when setting the hook, she was a little too gentle at first. All in all it was a great day to be on the ice and another excellent weasel outing. Hopefully we can shake this cold spell we are having right now and get back out on the ice a couple more times in the new year. I should mention in closing that we did have 5 tip-ups out but no flags, which is very unusual for Rhoeders. Word must have gotten to the pike family, not to mess with the weasels.
